Signs Your Thermostat is Wearing Out

When most people notice climate problems in their home, such as an inability to keep it cool in the summer or warm in the winter, their first instinct is to blame the HVAC system in their home.

How to Identify a Faulty Thermostat?

If you’ve lived in the same home for a while, it’s likely that you know what temperature range to set your thermostat for comfort in different seasons, so you’ll notice when these temperatures suddenly seem too warm or cool. This is the first sign that your thermostat may not be doing its job correctly.

First, check that your thermostat is operational.

If applicable, the switch should be pointed to the “on” position, and the appropriate selection between “heat” and “cool”. It’s important to note that different models aren’t notated the same.

Next, check the connection between the device and the HVAC system

On “heat”, turn the thermostat up slowly (down if on “cool”) until it clicks. The furnace should turn on almost instantly.

Dealing with a Worn Out Thermostat

If the HVAC system doesn’t respond to changes in the thermostat, you may need to have your thermostat replaced. For expert inspection of your HVAC system, including your thermostat’s operation and advice on replacement, contact an HVAC professional at Morelli Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.
