Hearing lots of noise when your furnace turns on or off?

Have you noticed that you hear a loud noise when your furnace turns on or off? Does it sound like your ductwork is popping or banging? Many people hear this same thing and describe it as a loud boom or bang. Although it can be unsettling when you first hear it, it's actually not something huge to worry about. We're in business to help you with problems just like this one! Read on to learn what causes your ductwork to pop when your furnace turns on or off -- and how you may be able to quiet those sounds.

What causes the "pop" sounds?

Oftentimes, buildup in your duct may cause unusual noises. This can happen when hot air rushes into a cold duct, thus making the metal expand. You might hear creaking or popping and reverberating, especially as the metal cools.

What can you do to help stop the sounds?

It's best to have a professional HVAC technician thoroughly inspect and clean your ductwork to help reduce or totally eliminate the loud noises. He or she will:

  • Use rubber pads to isolate the ducts from any wood
  • Make sure there's nothing blocking the air register, which can cause pressure problems
  • Check the system to ensure that it's not pushing more air than it's supposed to
  • Install a flexible transition to isolate the furnace noises
