When temperatures begin to fall and the air gets that nip in it that can only signify the start of winter, many homeowners attempt to switch over to their heating system only to find that it has quit on them over the summer. If you want to get ahead of costly repairs, you have to stay alert and pay attention to the signs of a failing unit. Here are some common residential furnace issues and how they’re caused.
Problem: My Furnace Isn’t Heating My Home
Cause: A clogged filter or your unit is improperly sized. The first part is easy, you can replace your old filter fairly inexpensively and if your furnace begins heating your home properly, you’ve found your solution. If your unit is improperly sized, though, you’ll have to call in the experts to find out the best possible course of action.
Problem: My Furnace Isn’t Turning On
Cause: You could be facing a faulty electric ignition or a pilot light that’s gone out. If your electric ignition is on the fritz, the best solution is to call in the experts. When the pilot light burns out, a good solution is to attempt to relight the flame. Start by turning the gas off to your furnace and letting the gas in the air dissipate for several minutes. Turn the gas knob to the pilot setting, press it in and hold it, and light the pilot light while holding the gas knob down for a minute. Release the gas knob and turn the gas to the “on” position. If your light goes out or refuses to light, a good solution is to contact the experts.
Problem: My Thermostat Isn’t Reading Correctly
Cause: Your thermostat may need new batteries or you could just need a new thermostat. Try replacing the batteries in your thermostat. When your thermostat runs out of batteries it could have trouble communicating with your furnace and create discrepancies in temperature and when to turn the heat on. If replacing the batteries doesn’t help, you should call in the experts at Morelli.
