3 Energy Efficient Ways to Cool Your Home This Summer

Residential Ceiling Fan

When talking about energy efficiency, having an air conditioning system running in tip-top shape is probably the single most effective way to reduce your home’s energy consumption while remaining nice and cool. However, here are three other tips you may not have considered:

Tip 1: Install a Ceiling Fan (or Fans)

Or, if you already have them, give them a good cleaning and then check to make sure they are rotating in a counter-clockwise direction. The movement of air across your skin will increase the feeling of coolness, and also helps the cooler air circulate throughout your house (even to those pesky rear areas away from the main ventilation!).

Tip 2: Keep Your Shades Drawn Against the Sun

Blocking the sun will keep the temperature inside of your home down, and help your cooling system work more efficiently. By preventing a rise of even a few degrees, you can save big bucks over the course of the entire summer.

Tip 3: Keep Damp Wash Rags in the Fridge

If you’ve just come in from the outdoor heat, and you can’t seem to cool down quick enough, place one around your neck. If you have more than one, you can also place them under your arms and over your wrists. Cooling these major pulse points will bring down your body temperature in a hurry, and prevent you from cranking up the AC to try and compensate for your temporary temperature increase.
